This is a classic piece of American cine history: the Bausch Lomb 25mm f/2.7 Animar Balcote lens. Manufactured in the U.S.A., this lens was the standard or normal focal length for 16mm movie cameras, prized for its robust build and optical quality.

The lens features BALCOTE multi-coating (Bausch Lomb’s proprietary anti-reflection coating), an advanced feature for its era (1940s-1950s), which helps improve light transmission and reduce flare.

A unique and highly collectible feature is the pictorial aperture markings, including settings for DULL, HAZY, BRIGHT and SUMMER/WINTER, offering a fascinating glimpse into early motion picture exposure techniques, alongside the traditional f-stop markings (f/2.7 to f/16).

Condition Report

The lens is in Very Good (VG) working condition but shows significant cosmetic wear typical of its age and material.

  • Optics: The glass elements are clear and bright. We detect no fungus or haze. Light cleaning marks may be visible on the outer glass, consistent with age, but they do not affect image quality.
  • Mechanism: The aperture ring rotates smoothly and correctly to set the f-stop.
  • Cosmetic: The aluminum barrel is well-used, exhibiting scratches and scuffing and a dull patina on the silver finish. The engravings are clear.

A great historical piece, suitable for collecting or adapting to modern mirrorless cameras (with appropriate adapters).
